Ladybugs Pest Control Q&A

lady bug pest control

Ladybugs are pretty cute as far as insects go, and they are actually beneficial to have around.  They are sometimes referred to as “natural pest control”; they feed on garden pests like aphids and spider mites. Humans and ladybugs generally have a good working relationship. They don’t bother us, we don’t bother them. Come autumn, they seek shelter from the cold. That is all well and good unless they want to share our shelter with us.

Are Ladybugs Dangerous?

While these beetles are not harmful to humans they actually secrete a toxin that affects other insects and some small animals. They secrete this toxic fluid from the joints in their legs when threatened. This fluid also wards off some predators because of its foul smell.

Do Ladybugs Bite?

Ladybugs very rarely will bite, but they do have the ability to. Luckily, if you’re bitten the bites are harmless. There is a type of insect very similar to a ladybug called an Asian lady beetle that came into North Carolina as an invasive species in 1992 is more likely to bite, but its bite is also harmless.

Is It Bad to Have Ladybugs in Your House?

One or two ladybugs indoors is nothing to worry about, but when you don’t have enough fingers to count all of them in your house, you may have an issue.  They will not cause any harm, but they may be a nuisance. They especially like to congregate in corners around ceilings during the fall and winter months and a patch of these little red beetles on your ceiling can look quite creepy.

How Do Ladybugs Survive the Winter?

Ladybugs go into diapause, which is similar to hibernation, starting in fall and lasting through the winter. They first find a safe and warm spot like under a nice rock, between a tree trunk and some loose bark, or inside your home. They can then regulate their body temperatures and live off of energy reserves for up to nine months if needed. They then enter a half-sleeping state where they stay unmoving until warmer months arrive.

What Attracts Ladybugs to Your House?

Ladybugs are attracted to warm, safe, dry places away from danger and colder temperatures. They often crawl in through holes, cracks, and openings in your home. Keep your windows and doors shut and be sure to close up any holes or openings in your walls that might allow these bugs and their friends to enter your home.
